European Union (EU) countries could have to reduce the use of plastic carrier bags by at least 80% by 2019 under draft rules backed by the European Parliament yesterday (16 April). 17 April 2014
Janez Potocnik, Europe’s commissioner for the environment, told the European Parliament yesterday [15 April] that plastic carrier bags are a “highly visible environmental problem” and that their over-consumption and littering need to be addressed. 16 April 2014

US-based Freedonia, a research company, has reported in its new Active & Intelligent Packaging study that the demand for smart packaging is set to rise in the US by 8% annually, reaching $3.5bn (£2bn) by 2017. 8 April 2014
