A fire at a waste recycling plant near Bolton needed 60 fire fighters to bring it under control. The blaze is the fourth at the Armstrong Environmental Services in the past two years, according to local media reports.

EuPR has condemned a PET recycling study by SRI Consulting as "dangerous." The document states that "disposing of bottles in landfill generates a lower carbon footprint than recycling or incineration." It also states that "waste shipping distances are not footprint critical."

A commercial recycler and social welfare charity has installed a £150,000 trommel screening plant as part of its aim to reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill. Recycling Lives, based across four sites in Preston, can now reduce waste previously destined for landfill by around 90%, according to the company.

Biffa Group has appointed Ian Wakelin as its new CEO. He was previously chief executive of Greenstar, which was recently acquired by Biffa. The intention is to now merge the companies.

Straight, the Leeds-based recycling container supplier, has moved into bin manufacturing with the purchase of injection moulder Dyro Holdings, which trades as Powell Plastics. The deal, worth 2.9 million pounds Sterling, includes Dyro’s Hull factory, which operates more than 20 injection moulding machines.

The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has announced that the BPF Recycling Council (BPFRC) is to be fully integrated into the Federation as from 1 January 2011. It will also take on a new identity, the BPF Recycling Group, and will be a fully fledged business group within the Federation's structure.
