Sika finds a winning Olympic application

The ArcelorMittal Orbit tower – who provided that membrane?

Preston’s Sika Liquid Plastics has reputedly provided a waterproofing membrane for the ArcelorMittal Orbit tower at the Olympic Park in London.

Preston’s mayor, Carl Crompton, labelled Sika's contribution to the iconic development “brilliant”.

However the company said it could not comment due to “the Olympic Delivery Authority implementing a 'no marketing rights' restriction”.

At 115 metres high the Orbit tower is the UK's tallest sculpture.

It is made of 1,500 tonnes of steel and features two large indoor viewing platforms for the public, accessed by two lifts and stairs.

The tower cost in the region of £20m to build, with £16m of that pricetag coming from steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, chairman of the ArcelorMittal steel company.

Orbit was designed by Turner Prize-winning Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond.
