Pay-and-go prototyping goes live in London

A purpose-built centre has opened in London that offers rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing facilities on a ‘pay-and-go’ basis. The four-story facility is an extension of the activities of Metropolitan Works, which currently operates on London Metropolitan University’s city campus in East London.
Two additive layer manufacturing machines from EOS – one for laser-sintering plastic powders and the other for metal powders – have join other rapid prototyping and manufacturing processes on site.
Matthew Lewis, manager of Metropolitan Works, said: “The new, pay-and-go centre offers a leading-edge, digital design and manufacturing workspace that is a flexible, economic alternative to renting workshops and studios on a fixed term basis.
“It is accessible to everyone – established businesses, creative practitioners, innovative thinkers and graduates – who can work alongside each other and feed off each other’s ideas.
“There is a strong, hands-on education and training element to the centre. However, we continue to offer our digital manufacturing bureau service, whereby Metropolitan Works’ technicians produce 3D components for companies and individuals.”
The EOSINT P plastic laser-sintering machine is also helping with manufacturing projects. In one instance, a fruit bowl was designed in four parts and produced from an EOS powdered polymer, from which a sand casting was made for batch production of the metal bowls. In another case, a silicon mould was made from a plastic laser-sintered part for the production of rubber doorstops.
