Dr Bennett has written to her country’s health minister regarding the use of bisphenol A and phthalates in some sex toys
Canadian MP Carolyn Bennett has sent a letter to the health minister, Leona Aglukkaq, asking for the country's sex toy industry to be regulated. According to Bennett, the use of bisphenol A and phthalates in some products could pose a health risk to women.
Bennett, who is a medical doctor, wrote that there is an “urgent need for responsible regulation in the adult toy industry in Canada”. She pointed out that bisphenol A cannot be used in the manufacture of baby bottles and phthalates are banned from use in children's “mouth toys”. However, there are no rules prohibiting their use in sex toys.
The issue came to Dr Bennett’s attention during a meeting with the owners of a sex shop in Toronto that specialises in ‘eco-friendly’ toys, who told her of their worries regarding the use of bisphenol A and phthalates in some products.
