Global PVC demand to reach 50m tons by 2020

A new report says that global PVC demand will show a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9% until 2020, pushing the market up to 49.5m tons.

Demand for PVC has grown steadily over the years, from 22.2m tons in 2000 to 32.3m tons in 2011, says the report from GBI Research. More than 65% of demand stems from Asia, where China is driving the majority.

The leading end-use segments in 2011 were construction (17m tons) packaging (3.7m tons) and electricals (2.7m tons). The automotive, agriculture, footwear and other end-use sectors accounted for the remainder.

GBI Research says energy efficiency and conservation are increasingly important and singled out Europe for its PVC sustainability. Thanks to the Vinyl 2010 programme, Europe recycled 260,842 tons of PCV in 2010, above its target of 200,000 tons.
