UK employment figure hits 30 million

The number of people in work has reached nearly 30 million, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The ONS said that between October and December last year there were 29.73 million people in work, up 154,000 on the previous three months and the highest number of people in employment since records began in 1971.
The unemployment rate was 7.8%, down 0.1 percentage point on the previous quarter, with 2.5 million people without a job, down 14,000 on the period July to September.
Youth unemployment – regarded as those between 16 and 24 year-olds – rose by 11,000 to 974,000.
The ONS also noted that there were 1.1 million people who held down more than one job to make ends meet.
