Pafa supports calls for reprocessing cash in Wales

The Packaging and Films Association (Pafa) has thrown its weight behind calls for greater investment in Welsh reprocessing facilities.

Following comments by Beth Winkley, who heads up Wrap Cymru, Pafa chief executive Barry Turner said: “We are backing any call for greater investment in recycling infrastructure and echo Beth’s view to all UK governments, not just Wales.

By encouraging the technologies and facilities for reprocessing and recycling, we can recover the outstanding resource that is inherent in plastics of all kinds and ensure we give the resource a useful second life.”

Winkley warned that Wales faced the danger of missing the target of recycling 70% of all waste by 2025 unless there was more investment in reprocessing facilities.

In a current round of bidding, major reprocessing projects in Wales could also benefit from grants of between £250,000 and £500,000 in ‘match-funding’ up to 40% of the project costs under the Accelerating Reprocessing Infrastructure Development scheme, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund. Arid includes plastic waste as a main target.

Increasing the capacity to recycle brings not just an environmental benefit, it is also crucial to the growth of the economy, creating jobs and enabling substantial economic and resource savings for years to come” said Turner.

With the plastics industry facing the challenge of meeting the UK 57% recycling target by 2017, Turner said Pafa was behind the call for a significant acceleration of reprocessing to enable environmental challenges to be met.

Recycling and reprocessed materials are vital to the growth and sustainability of our industry and it’s important that, at UK government level, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs recognises that current infrastructure is inadequate and will fall short of delivering the recycling targets that have been set” he added.
