Business Secretary Vince Cable has paid tribute to the work done by the British Plastics Federation (BPF), currently celebrating its 80th anniversary.

In a message to the BPF Cable congratulated the trade body on its anniversary and the work it did to represent and promote the interests of the UK plastics industry.

“The BPF represents a sector that continues to be of strategic importance to the economy of the UK,” he said.

“Your sector contributes £18bn of sales turnover and employs some 180,000. Crucially, plastics are essential to much of our manufacturing and distributive sectors and underpin the success of many sectors.”

Cable said that a successful manufacturing sector, one which included a “highly innovative and successful plastics sector”, was key to achieving the government’s ambition of establishing a competitive advantage for the UK over the next 20 years.

The business secretary also acknowledged the BPF’s active role in overseas markets.

“In this anniversary year the BPF will be represented at trade fairs in Dubai, Guangzhou, Dusseldorf and Mumbai.

“Working in partnership with UK Trade and Investment your work is helping to ensure that the UK plays a strong role in the global economy,” he added.

Meanwhile at a briefing for journalists in London this week BPF president Philip Watkins said that events to mark the organisation’s 80th anniversary would include a conference to be held in Manchester on 13 June.

Under the banner ‘Plastics United’ the BPF’s conference would feature speakers including John Cridland, director-general of the CBI.
