BASF buys Brazil’s nylon 6 maker Mazzaferro

BASF has acquired a nylon 6 resin and compounding plant from Mazzaferro Group in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil.

The plant has annual polymerization capacity of about 44 million pounds. Almost 100 Mazzaferro employees will transfer to BASF as a result of the deal. No purchase price was disclosed in a May 3 news release from BASF, which is based in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

The deal does not include Mazzaferro’s monofilament, fishing equipment and household products businesses. Those businesses will continue to produce their products at plants in São Paulo and Diadema, Brazil.

“The demand for nylon in the automotive and extrusion industry will grow particularly strongly in Brazil,” BASF performance polymers president Wolfgang Hapke said in the release. “The new site enables us to share in this growth and supply our South American customers with locally manufactured product faster and more flexibly.”

Mazzaferro, founded in 1953, is a consumer products conglomerate based in São Bernardo do Campo. BASF ranks as one of the world’s largest plastics and chemicals makers with sales of almost $96bn in 2011.
