France's ecology minister, Chantal Jouanno, has launched a framework agreement to promote bio-based, compostable plastic waste bags in the country.
The government says it will make the bags, which will contain 40% vegetable-based material next year and 70% in 2018, more available to consumers across the country.
“As well as developing waste bags made out of biodegradable plastics we will prioritise organic waste, either by promoting individual composting or by building more industrial composting sites,” the minister said in a statement.
The covenant was signed by the French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development, the French Mayors Association (AMF), the Federation of Commerce and Distribution in France (FCD), the French Bioplastics Association (Club Bio-plastiques), the Association of Plastics Manufacturers (Plastics Europe) and the French Plastic and Flexible Packaging Association (ELIPSO).
European Bioplastics praised the initiative, calling it a significant contribution to environmentally sound waste management.
“The use of certified compostable bioplastic waste bags supports the organic recovery of biodegradable waste,” says Hasso von Pogrell, European Bioplastics managing director. “The French agreement can therefore be seen as a role model for other European countries.”
