Borealis BorECO chosen for coastal sewer project

The German port of Cuxhaven has used BorECO, a PP material from Borealis, to replace its concrete and clay sewer system.
“The old system was leaking badly and in urgent need of renovation,” says Borealis. “The network owner wanted the new system to be leak-tight.”
The new pipes, manufactured by Rehau, combine high stiffness with excellent impact resistance, and the high molecular weight, low melt-flow block copolymer runs very easily on existing pipe extrusion equipment, says Borealis.
The material weights 51kg less than concrete per 1m pipe and are much less likely to break, says Borealis.
“With a flexible pipe such as that made from BorECO, the surrounding soil and the pipes establish a safe symbiosis preventing leakage in the case of soil settlements,” says Jane Toogood, Borealis vice-president of the pipe business unit. “Rigid concrete or clay pipe has no deflection capability and breaks under load or soil movements.”
