European medical products manufacturer Coloplast has established a new packaging and distribution centre in Tata, Hungary to enable the firm to expand its local manufacturing operations.
The new 4,200 m2 centre, which is reported by Hungary’s MTI news agency to be employing up to 100 new workers, is designed to allow more space for production at Coloplast’s two Hungarian plants in Tatabanya and Nyírbátor.
The company, which makes special wound dressings and medical drainage urology and colostomy products, opened its first manufacturing unit in Hungary at Tatabanya in 2002. That plant has been expanded in two phases and by 2006 it employed more than 900.
In 2007, Humlebaek, Denmark-based Coloplast launched its production unit in Nyirbator in 2007 and this 20,000 m2 now employs 600.
As part of its longer term strategy, Coloplast has been relocating much of its manufacturing from Denmark to the lower cost sites in Eastern Europe, and in China where it has two plants.
