Latvian firm moves into wood-plastic extrusion

Latvian packaging producer N.V. Vega SIA has taken the green route in a plan to diversify its operations as it moves into the manufacture of extruded wood plastics composite (WPC) products.

Traditionally, a thermoformer of plastics containers for dairy foods and meat, the Riga, Latvia-based company invested in a new WPC extrusion line supplied by German machinery builder Reifenhauser Extrusion.

Vega has begun extruding eco-friendly hollow profile window sills made from the wood fibre and polymer composite at its Riga plant. Conventional firewood pellets make up a substantial part of the material processed to make fully recyclable products.

The resulting lightweight, low priced window component demonstrates outstanding heat insulation properties, according to Reifenhauser of Troisdorf, Germany.

The Vega WPC line is based on the supplier's twin-screw Bitruder 92 extruder which is equipped with counter-rotating intermeshing screws to offer optimum conditions for processing the mix of wood fibre and polymers like polyethylene and polypropylene.

Reifenhauser, which also recently supplied WPC line equipment in China, said it expects to announce two further supply contracts for WPC lines in the Baltic country.
