Impact Labs funded for plastics recycling research

The Scottish government has award Smart funding to Grangemouth’s Impact Laboratories for work on the use of unsorted plastics and natural fibres found in the waste stream.
The aim is to develop products, such as weather-resistant timber replacement materials for non-structural applications including cladding and decking, that are cost-competitive as well as environmentally low impact.
The development of mass-treatment technologies for unsorted domestic waste will offer a massive reduction in demand for landfill, according to Impact’s Dr Ian Vallance.
“We are naturally excited about getting set to unlock the potential in waste plastics and natural fibre. New mass treatment technologies are being introduced to deal with the unsorted domestic waste and these, combined with automated sorting technologies, will produce huge volumes of sorted waste streams on a previously unprecedented scale,” said Dr Vallance.
Pricing, he added, would be the key to making the project a success, along with developing markets for recycled materials.
